‘Your Party’ was sold to us as a party that would belong to its members, but the founding process so far has shown that the leadership has no interest in party democracy. From a launch ruined by squabbles among careerist politicians, to a shambolic regional assembly process that has cut out local organisers, failed to release key documents for scrutiny and left members in the dark. The membership is being ignored every step of the way.
Clearly, someone in Party HQ shares our concerns. Yesterday, a draft of the Your Party Constitution was leaked, which seems to confirm all our worst fears of a stitch-up at the top of the party. The document is designed for an anti-democratic process, filled with vague language and limited options, leaving members with only a veneer of choice. This is not the party we signed up for!
At DSYP, we have a bold alternative vision to build a truly socialist and truly democratic party which empowers grassroots members rather than politicians. Just last week, we saw the broad support that exists for a democratic party when hundreds of activists came together at TWT and voted in support of the Unity Statement. But the leaked draft constitution shows us that to achieve our vision, we will need to get organised and fight for democracy throughout the founding process.
