About Democratic Socialists
We are Democratic Socialists (DS), a grassroots campaign dedicated to building the mass, revolutionary, democratic socialist party the working class desperately needs.
Originally founded as DSYP (Democratic Socialists of Your Party) to intervene in the foundation process of Your Party (YP). We put forward multiple proposals to the founding conference, winning the argument and then the vote for collective leaders and fought for the inclusion of trans liberation alongside other organisations and members. We were instrumental in forming the Grassroots Left slate for the YP Central Executive Committee elections.
However, we recognise the likely failure of YP as a long-term socialist project following the anti-democratic and sectarian moves taken by the leadership clique directed by Jeremy Corbyn. Because no existing organisation is equipped to serve as a vehicle for mass working-class politics, we have recently re-founded as Democratic Socialists and will now also work beyond YP, fighting for the party we need.
Our Strategy
Our immediate goal is to launch the Campaign for a Democratic Socialist Party. While we continue to organise within YP for now to connect with its 50,000 members, our ultimate aim is to build a viable, independent political alternative.
We are currently consolidating our supporters into a structured, dues-paying membership based on a clear socialist programme. Our strategy is uncompromising: we will stand in elections to offer a genuine alternative, but we will never enter capitalist coalitions or take government positions without explicit guarantees that our programme will be implemented in full.
What We Fight For
We recognise that working-class liberation cannot be achieved under capitalism. We demand:
-
A Democratic Republic: Radical democratisation of the state, including the abolition of the monarchy and the House of Lords, and a Parliament elected by proportional representations with MPs on a workers wage.
-
A Socialist Economy: Democratic planning, the socialisation of production, a 4-day working week, and the decommodification of housing.
-
Uncompromising Internationalism: We are anti-imperialist, anti-racist, and explicitly anti-Zionist. We demand withdrawal from NATO, an end to all imperialist wars, and practical solidarity with the global working class.
-
Total Solidarity: Complete defence of the most marginalised sections of our class, notably migrants and trans people, who face daily assault from reactionary forces.
Build the Party With Us
The mass working-class party we need will not be handed to us. It must build it in our workplaces, our streets, and our communities.
