As of 22 July 2026, following an All Member Meeting, the Democratic Socialists have voted to mothball the organisation. This decision – short of full dissolution – brings our active political work to a close while preserving our digital infrastructure and archive as a historical record. The meeting reached this conclusion with a near-unanimous view that Democratic Socialists could no longer continue as a viable organisation.
This decision was not taken lightly. It reflects a sober assessment of our current political conjuncture, the organisational capacity of our membership, the fundamental changes in the terrain upon which we were founded, and the failure to develop a positive political culture internally.
Democratic Socialists had been in a state of terminal decline for some time. The political conditions that gave us life – the genuine possibility of transforming Your Party from within – no longer exist in a viable form. Our dependency on Your Party as an organisational vehicle, the ground game we never quite built, and a series of incidents both external and internal that drained our standing and morale all contributed to this slow, grinding halt.
Whilst we were able to articulate and develop a political analysis that resonated with many, we lacked the institutional space to translate that analysis into durable political force. The absence of active Your Party branches, the inability to develop an alternative campaigning space, and the broader disillusionment with the state of the British left, meant we had no viable arena for intervention long term.
We made a big impact. We were the intellectual engine of the Your Party left, where we drafted a comprehensive constitution, political statement and programme; we were central in diplomatic efforts in bringing together Your Party groups at The World Transformed 2025, including Trans Liberation Group (TLG), Eco-Socialist Horizon (ESH), the Greater Manchester Left Caucus (GMLC) and more; we repeated those efforts with the revolutionary left, forming the Socialist Unity Platform (SUP) and the basis for the Sheffield Demands. At Your Party Founding Conference, we spearheaded the campaign for collective leadership and other major policy commitments like trans liberation.
This laid the foundational groundwork for cohering the Grassroots Left, which comrades should be particularly proud of. Through running a large part of the logistical and strategic campaign, writing Workers Deserve The Earth political statement, creating a comradely and collaborative approach to the campaign itself, DSYP was vital in ensuring the election of a principled minority to the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of Your Party. We extend our thanks to other organisations that we collaborated and worked alongside during the campaign period.
However, such successes alone were never enough to break through the gravity that keeps groups like ours as micro-sects.
Chronic issues of organiser fatigue and burnout were ever-present. The immense work carried out by comrades came at significant personal cost.The organisation repeatedly found itself dragged into internal debates with no clear path to resolution and external controversies in Your Party (for example the banning of socialist groups and collapse of Your Party Scotland) that tested the resilience of an already stretched membership, all against a backdrop of a pervasively toxic internal culture. Whilst we refounded following extensive internal debate to attempt to survive independently outside of Your Party, the attrition of active members left an increasing weight on fewer shoulders, leaving the organisation more vulnerable to being dragged into frivolous matters. It is not sustainable, or fair, to ask comrades to continue carrying that weight for diminishing returns.
Thus, rather than remaining a micro-sect – which others are evidently content to remain as – effective immediately, Democratic Socialists will cease all active campaigning, membership onboarding, and public political interventions. The organisation will not be formally dissolved, but placed into a mothballed state.
Practically, this means:
This is, in effect, a closure of active operations. The technical infrastructure is kept ticking over purely as a matter of archival legacy, not as a prelude to reactivation. We do not frame this as a waiting game. Should a genuinely new conjuncture ever emerge, our infrastructure and political platform could theoretically be retooled, but that is a contingency, not an expectation.
This is a disappointing moment, but it is not a shameful one. We made a genuine intervention and produced a body of political work that forced others to engage with our arguments. That work was carried out by comrades who gave freely of their time, energy, and emotional resilience.
Thank you to all comrades who wrote documents, canvassed, chaired calls, and held the line through difficult periods. We are immensely proud of what was built, even if we could not sustain it. Whilst an apology does not undo the stress or emotional harm that was endured by comrades, we extend our heartfelt apologies to those who gave so much for such a diminutive end.
For now, this is where we leave Democratic Socialists – not with a bang, but with an acknowledgment of everything that was, and everything that might have been.
